Marching Toward the Walk

Greetings from Boston!  We are now less than 2 weeks away from the official start of the 7th Operation Walk Boston trip, which will commence on Wednesday, March 19, when the majority of our team arrives in the Dominican Republic.  Several of our team members will arrive even earlier to begin organizing the hundreds of boxes of cargo that made their way down well ahead of time.

In preparation for our departure, the entire team gathered at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital last night for our final team meeting in Boston prior to meeting up in the Dominican Republic.  We discussed everything from the daily schedule to the flow of the Operating Room to the post-operative pain medication regimen, every detail of which has been reviewed and improved over the course of the past year under the leadership of Dr. Thornhill, Dr. Katz, Chief Operating Officer Roya Ghazinouri, Chief Medical officer Dr. Carl Harper, and their team.

The team gathers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital on March 5 for our final meeting prior to heading to the Dominican Republic on March 19, 2014.

One of the most exciting announcements at this meeting was that this year we will aim to provide joint replacements for 43 patients, with the goal of performing 43 total knee replacements (including both knees for 15 patients) and 18 total hip replacements (including both hips for 3 patients).  We will begin to work toward this goal on the afternoon after our arrival, with that morning spent meeting these patients in clinic, examining them, and reviewing their medical records.

We are excited to embark on this adventure.  Stay tuned for updates as we make our way down to the Dominican Republic, and thank you as always for your support of our mission.

Lauren
